It sounds like easy money-a bit of driving work for enigmatic pop star turned 'Investigative Consultant' Paul Zoff. But when struggling comic book dealer Rob Nelson takes on the job, he finds out there's a bit more to it than just driving.
Millionaire carpet king and retired cat burglar Jack Horner has had some rare comics stolen and and his right-hand man shot dead in a robbery, and thinks Zoff and Nelson might be the men to recover his property. But when two gunmen start to show an interest in Zoff's investigation and things start to turn nasty, there's only one place to go...Whitby. Very nice this time of year...
A rollicking Noir-ish tale of murder, mayhem and synth-pop, 'Acceptable In The Eighties' is funnier than 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo', and shorter than 'The Big Sleep'.

ACCEPTABLE IN THE EIGHTIES is fast-paced and full of surprises. The story revolves around Rob, the comic book collector/salesman, who is on the verge of losing his house. He has no money and no career to fall back on, so when his parents announce their plan to sell the house in which he currently resides, Rob knows he has to begin earning his keep. He rather unexpectedly falls into a job as a driver for the somewhat mysterious Paul Zoff, and the story really takes off from there. Rob has no way of knowing that his job as a driver will entail doing detective work, running from hardened criminals who are trying to kill him, devising an escape plan, and getting involved with an unusual girl. I loved most of the humorous dialogue, the witty, colorful characters, and the action-packed adventures. My only complaint concerns some language in the book. In my unprofessional opinion, it was a little heavy on four-letter words. However, the story is an enjoyable ride through the misadventures of Rob, Paul, and the assorted people they meet along the way.Product details

Acceptable In The Eighties edition by Thom Fell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
It wasn't a book that I went looking for but when I saw the name and read the synopsis I knew I wanted to read it. Noir is hard, it's a thankless genre to attempt to write. Many writers have tried, failed and look contrived...thank Christ for Thom Fell. ACCEPTABLE IN THE 80s is a contemporary noir cut from coat tails of Raymond Chandler with the sharp English tongue of Peter Cook. Fell knows where to adhere to genre conventions and where to push the boundaries. A gem for all who remember beta max and a lesson for those who don't.
Well it sounded good but I could not read it. The language was so bad that a shock jock would be shocked. Did not bother to finish.
I picked this up on a whim while trying to diversify my collection. Its lingo and slang were a bit hard to get into, but the overall story was ok. It made me think about the "shawn of the dead" characters.
